Cowboy Action Shooting requires a particular shooting order for the targets Stage writers can often get in a rut trying to design a stage that has a "New" shooting order. Using your memory is not going to give you a fresh selection. Unfortunately, making up shooting strings, on the fly, can result in complicated and hard to understand shooting orders.
It is really helpful to have a list to choose from. The shooting order should also be easy to remember for us older folks! Keeping the firing order symmetrical and flowing naturally, can aid in the memory process. The attached list of shooting sequences have proven to be easy to remember and likeable by most shooters.
For a club that shoots 6 stages a month, for nine months of the
year, there are enough sequences here to have no repeated sequences for your
matches, for almost five years! Feel free to use them and add your own to the
lists. Hopefully it will help you produce stages that are fresh, challenging and
easy to remember. Dumps and 10 rounds on 10 targets are not listed but they are certainly
good sequences once in awhile.
Sequences on 5 targets can be used for 10 rifle rounds if repeated. For variety,
a second set of 5 targets for the second pistol or rounds 6 -10 on the rifle,
can be used. This also gives the shooter a nice visual array of targets when
they step up to the firing line.
All lists are in Adobe PDF format. If you do not have Adobe, or you have an older version that will not display the links, you may download a new edition here .
The sequences have the target number at the top and the shot numbers are listed numerically below each target number. Placement of the targets in a circle or other stand configuration can add to the variety. For the purpose of the lists however, target are listed in a line. The far right column is for recording when you used a particular sequence.
This is certainly not all of the potential sequences and it is surprising how many different ways there are to assign target orders.
